350-year-old picture of dodo before it was extinct

A previously undiscovered 17th century picture of a dodo, drawn before the bird became extinct, is to be sold at auction by Christie's. The drawing, which dates from the late 1600s, offers a rare insight into the appearance of the flightless bird that was the first recorded casualty of human interference in the habitat of other creatures. Rosie the Riveter passed away June 28 at the age of 86.

Rosalie Kunert, the inspiration behind the iconic Rosie the Riveter, passed away June 28 at the age of 86. Rosie's can-do spirit was captured in an ad campaign by J. Walter Thompson and sponsored by the Office of War Information and War Manpower Commission, designed to inspire other women to join the workforce during WWII. It worked - to the tune of two million new women on the job. Link

Smokers anonymous? How many

of you (us) smoke cigarettes while posting? Are you addicted? to smoking, not posting.. I found on the Book Chat board, about 1/2 of posters were 1-pack @ day or more. Of course, this was about 5 years ago. Also, many were sipping a cool-one or fine wine in the pms especially... It reminded me of the film SIDEWAYS, when the Paul Giamatti character started dialing up his ex-wife after a bout of wine-tasting and his buddy warned him about DWD -Dialing While Drinking.

males... Hispanic males are now majority in county jails Jul 7, 2009 ... Hispanic males are now majority in county jails, Hike due to overall population trends coupled with a series of recent laws targeting ... www.azcentral.com/.../20090707jailpopshift0707.html - Of course the Arizona Republic depends on Chamber of Commerce for advertising revenues... interesting slant about "targeting" when you see vans with 25 people speeding down Route 10 North from Border. This is reason I remain Independent as far a voter registration as I can't vote for liberal illegal immigrants rulings/laws. ...from quoted (link) article: "In 2006, County Attorney Andrew Thomas issued an opinion allowing prosecutors to charge illegal immigrants as co-conspirators in their own smuggling. Voters also approved Proposition 100, which denies bail to illegal immigrants. In 2007, the Sheriff's Office, Phoenix police and the state Department of Public Safety entered into agreements allowing officers and deputies to receive Immigration and Customs Enforcement training. Voters approved the Legal Arizona Workers Act, the state's employer-sanctions law. Sheriff Joe Arpaio has used ICE-trained deputies to conduct crime sweeps in neighborhoods with high Hispanic populations and work-site raids, which frequently result in arrests for warrants and other crimes that have nothing to do with immigration. Arpaio pointed to his policy decisions and the new laws as a reason for the jail-population shift, particularly the denial of bail to illegal immigrants. "They're staying there. They're not getting the revolving door. When we arrest them, they can't get right out on bond," Arpaio said..." -Arizona Republic And I have real difficulty with amnesty although both McCain and Obama support some type of amnesty. If you live along the Border, our experience is far different than 1000 miles North. It feels like we're being taken-over (invaded). It's no wonder teens can't get Summer jobs - many are taken by below minimum wage illegals (landscaping) in particular

USA Today Superman strip/Wednesday Comics

USA Today kicked off its serialization of the Superman strip from DC's Wednesday Comics this morning in its print and online editions. As announced last month, the John Arcudi and Lee Bermejo story debuts in today's newspaper, with subsequent episodes appearing on the USA Today website, which boasts an audience of 3.6 million. Each weekly online installment will be promoted in the print edition. USA Today's Wednesday Comics web page sports a DC Comics logo and head shots of Superman, Green Lantern, Batman, Sgt. Rock and Wonder Woman. The brief article below the Superman comic includes a link to Diamond Comic Distributors' Comic Shop Locator. The New York Daily News also covers the launch of the 12-week miniseries, whose format and approach pay homage to the golden age of Sunday comics: The 16-page comic unfolds from 7 inches by 10 inches to 28 inches by 20 inches. Each of the 15 stories get its own 14-inch by 20-inch page. "It's either old-fashioned or it's cutting edge, or it's a little bit of both," DC Comics Executive Editor Dan DiDio tells the Daily News. Link The link is to the actual USA today site. If you are a fan of old comic strips or have a nostalgia for newsprint at all, you might consider picking this up. I bought several of the newsprint copies today, and am very impressed at the way the spirit of the old strips is resurrected here. It is top-notch stuff, a very impressive retro offering from DC Comics, 15 one-page story installments featuring some of he more obscure DC properties as well as the excellent Superman strip. Smells great, too. They are selling briskly as well, the public seems to like what they see.

God helps those who...

A Jewish guy called Jacob finds himself in dire trouble. His business has gone bust and he's in serious financial trouble. He's so desperate that he decides to ask God for help. He goes into the synagogue and begins to pray "God, please help me, I've lost my business and if I don't get some money, I'm going to lose my house as well, please let me win the lotto". Lotto night comes and somebody else wins it. Jacob goes back to the synagogue. "God, please let me win the lotto, I've lost my business, my house and I'm going to lose my car as well". Lotto night comes and Jacob still has no luck!! Back to the synagogue. "My God, why have you forsaken me? I've lost my business, my house, my car, and my wife and children are starving. I don't often ask you for help and I have always been a good servant to you. Why won't you just let me win the lotto this one time so I can get my life back in order???". Suddenly there is a blinding flash of light as the heavens open and Jacob is confronted by the voice of GOD himself: "JACOB, MEET ME HALF WAY ON THIS ONE, BUY A TICKET!"

Coming of age in the years of living dangerously

...many of us who were raised in the 1950s, '60s and '70s are survivors. We were tiny daredevils: sun-blasted, pocket-knife-carrying, bottom-spanked, cow eaters. We ran the streets armed with BB guns, boxing gloves and bottle rockets, wholly unprotected by bike helmets, sunscreen or Amber Alerts. Our houses were filled with the blue cigarette smoke of our cocktail-drinking parents and we believed it wasn't supper without a mountain of red meat. Link

Does it HAVE to have pictures.....

To be valuable? I've got a 1923 pamphlet results of INTERNATIONAL AIR RACES REPORT OF CONTEXT COMMITTEE LAMBERT-ST LOUIS FIELD... October 2,3,4,5,6, 1923. 4to, consisting mostly of 8 very long folding charts listing winners of the eight major events including the Pulitzer trophy--world air speed record set of over 200 mph. But no drawings, photos or other images.... how badly does the 'dry' nature of the text affect desirability and/or price? I find no comps, but know that one of you will pop up with an auction record or catalog listing in about 10 minutes just to make me feel inadequate... :0

Sorry guys, you all are going to be stuck with me bawling all night

Before this night is over I will flip out. I keep a pretty high stress level on this end. I have always been a pretty high wired person. Most times I handle it real well. Tonight, forget it, I am going to go nuts and hope I don't come back anytime soon. Where is Fried when I need him?? My main stress factor as you can imagine is kids. I have one right now at this very minute stuck on the highway. He is between Manshac, La. and Hammond, La, on the highrise. Dark as all all on that strip of road. This is the kid that has a deathly fear of bridges and height, so keep that in mind when you read this. He hit a huge pothole and it blew his tire out. This is my son that is extremely smart, but it is book smart only. Trust me on this statement. So what does he do, calls me. Life WTF, what can I do from here. I am in the middle of packing, just got Gabby to sleep, husband is about to go ballsitic with all this carp and I feel like I am going to puke. So he goes to change the tire and you got it, the SOB takes the tire off and is putting that stupid donut on and the car falls off the jack. Keep in mind, I am five feet, 110 pounds and can change a tire, change the oil, etc. Calls me frantic. Now what can I do from here. I told him to call 911, tell them what is happening and that is too dark from him to see. All of this is happening and it dawns on me. What are you doing there, you never drive out there. Now my stomach hurts more as I guessed the answer. He is heading back home. This kid thinks we have a revolving door. Move out, move home, move out, move home. I no sooner get the room redone to how I like it and here comes a kid. Sorry Dr. Laura but I don't feel like being a mom anymore. Or at least for the next week or two. I need a break. So now that you all got stuck listening to me babble on. Poll time: For real, how many of you really think we are leaving at three in the morning to drive to DC??? To calm me down right now would take more footballs than my weight would take. I would OD for sure. So I took none. When I am nervous I cook or clean. Trust me on this when I say there is nothing left to clean. I have scoured this house the last week with my nerves. Cook, forget that, too hot and too late Anyway, who is going to eat it??? I must have been a real bad child as I am having bad Karma right now. I must have done something wrong as a kid. Either that or I just raised dumb kids. Either way I am sure paying the price, and in my 50's at that. Me

book-price, should I sell?

Hi I have the book: The Psychology of Moral Development: The Nature and Validity of Moral Stages (Essays on Moral Development, Volume 2) by Lawrence Kohlberg Which sells starting at $294.67 according to addall. My questions: I am curious why it would sell for so much, is it out of print? How long do you think it would take to sell? Perhaps I should go much lower if I want to sell it quickly? thanks for any responses, I am very new at this. The book is intact, an ex library book with dust jacket (protected by library's plastic). Pages are yellowing a bit, no high lighting. I looked at descriptions of some of the copies for sale and they are similar.

New Book - Military History -- The Liberty

June 8, 1967. Israeli forces attacked The Libertyin international waters. 34 sailors died and 171 were injured. The whole thing was supressed -- swept under the rug. James Ennes wrote Assault on the Liberty. There are allegations that the book was suppressed in a variety of ways. Now comes Attack on the Liberty by James Scott. The reviews I've seen have been positive and he's working with materials that have been de-classified since Ennes wrote his book. I've just started it. If you have an interest in military history, it's probably worth reading.

Stagflation? or worse?

Prices for construction steel: metal studs and related items, are starting a steep climb. 10% this month (August Delivery), 10% projected for September and another 10% for October. Seems that the recession closed down plants, so that what demand there is is creating higher prices. Of course, this will be seen in the GDP as a "positive indicator" as the dollars will push towards growth. When it's just higher prices. Like the price of gas. They say that the construction industry is a harbinger of the economy as a whole. 10% a month, heck, we'll be out of the recession by Christmas Only dead wood goes with the flow.

Oh, the irony

Congress, in its finite wisdom, passes a bill, part of which is designed to rescue the poor schmucks who signed a four-page contract without understanding it. The bill is an 800-page document which they haven't read, are incapable of understanding, and is designed to "fix" an economy of which they also are incapable of understanding. Now, they're going to take this colossal incompetence into the private sector and run our auto, finance, healthcare and banking industries. It this really what America voted for in the last two elections?

Church Design ... Church Size ... The Church of the BSB

The Church Design thread left me wondering of the size of an individual Church ... My "ideal" Church would number no more congregants Than a group of people who comfortably knew each other ... Ideal is the key word here for many reasons ... the threat of stagnation not being the least Mine is not a practical or "working" definition or solution for a "model" size congregation ... Then you go from Church to Chat Room and it is easy to see why few of the same rules would apply ... A Church congregation is united in basic beliefs of worship While the individuals here on this board mostly exist and work at cross purposes But there is room for "unlimited congregants" here ... but again ... few apply for "membership"

Invaded! How one small town became overrun with vampires

Residents of Forks, Washington State, are still stunned by what a piece of assiduous Googling from Twilight author Stephenie Meyer has unleashed on their town. Looking for the US's rainiest location in which to set her vampire series, she lighted upon the small town, population 3,221. Fans of the books and film, based around Bella Swan and her dreamy vampire love interest Edward Cullen, began pouring into Forks. Today hundreds visit the town daily; its visitor count for June was more than 8,000 - around the number who used to come in a year. Restaurants have Twilight-themed menus with dishes such as Bellasagne, shops sell Twilight items, and tours cover the books' locations. Link

House cats know what they want and how to get it from you

Anyone who has ever had cats knows how difficult it can be to get them to do anything they don't already want to do. But it seems that the house cats themselves have had distinctly less trouble getting humans to do their bidding, according to a report published in the July 14th issue of Current Biology, a Cell Press publication. The rather crafty felines motivate people to fill their food dishes by sending something of a mixed signal: an urgent cry or meowing sound embedded within an otherwise pleasant purr. The result is a call that humans generally find annoyingly difficult to ignore. Link

Penny Wise or Pool Foolish?

I must be missing something very important. Link CNN article The day care center folks have voted to not to accept the invitation to return with the children to the swim club, and, according to the CNN article, are going to sue the swim club. What does it mean to be damaged emotionally for a child nowadays? Have racists remarks been elevated to thee most damaging remarks a child can hear? What am I missing? Teaching the children to Not work it if there is an opportunity to sue. The first thing I would do is return with the children. Teach them to stand up for who they are. AND, help others understand who they are. The swim club manager handled the entire matter very badly. Now, the day care center is handling the entire matter even worse than the swim club manager, IMO.

OT--Summer Sourdough Science

I'm a pretty good amateur home cook. I love to experiment, and only on the rare occasion make a truly inedible mistake. But I don't measure, I substitute ingredients, and I mix and match recipes off the internet and from my home library. And I don't keep records. So I can seldom if ever exactly replicate a dish. So I'm considering using some of my time this summer to experiment. I seldom bake, because baking doesn't fit my

PUNCH Newspapers 1907-1910 Listing Strategy?

I reviewed closed auctions and I do not see many listings for this publication. I purchased a large box lot. They date from the mid-1900s to the 19-teens. They are in fairly good shape: complete, clean and definitely readable. The illustrations are great and the ads are even better. I want to list them (obviously) but how? As single issues, by the year, in lots of 10/15/20? Are there issues I should be looking for? - first editions of novels? This is a new listing frontier, so suggestions are appreciated!

Most pleasing purchase of 2009?

2009 so far seems to have feautured some very good auctions - on this side of the Pond we've had two country house libraries, a large library of early books from Worcester and almost double the usual number of general book sales in the first half of the year. The Harry and Virginia Walton sale stood astride the Atlantic in Bloomsbury's New York and London branches - with some genuinely unique items sold. It was also the source of our most pleasing acquisition of this year, just arrived this morning, a Morocco solander box containing 45 original pencil drawings by John Leech of illustrations for the hunting novels of Surtees. As a fan of both Leech and Surtees, its going to be a real wrench to sell this! So, what have been your best purchases of this year?

ObamaNation: Janus in the White House

The Dims Two-Faced God of situational ethics, aka "It's okay if the Dims do it":"I think those 44 Democrats are sensitive to the immediate political climate of uncertainty around this issue," Mr. Obama said. "They've got to run every two years, and I completely understand that." Many of them represent districts that rely heavily on coal for power generation or that are home to industries vulnerable to international competition. Mr. Obama said the House bill contained transitional assistance for these regions. But he expressed scorn for the Republicans who fought the bill. He noted that some of them were predicting political doom for those who voted for it, recalling the 1993 battle over an energy tax that failed and helped Republicans gain control of the House a year later. Those Republicans, he said, "are 16 years behind the times," comparing their position to that of their party's leaders in the energy and health care debates of the early Clinton years. not content, he also dives deep into delusion: "I think it's fair to say that over the first six months we've seen more action on shifting ourselves away from dependence on foreign oil and fossil fuels than at any time in several decades," Mr. Obama said. unless, of course, he's counting prolonging the recession with a bogus stimulus package. Getting less friendly here for new sellers--

PayPal Reserves Explained Like all financial service companies, PayPal must manage risk in its system to protect the interests of all customers--sellers and buyers. PayPal's goal is to do this with minimal impact to our customers while also delivering the most cost-effective electronic payment method available. For a few sellers--currently less than 1%--PayPal may require a small percentage of payment volume held in their account for a period of time -- similar to a security deposit to cover any potential chargebacks and reversals. Though these practices will affect very few eBay sellers, in the interest of good partnership, we want to make sure all sellers are aware of these practices and not taken by surprise if they should be impacted or hear of other sellers being impacted. Remembering Apollo 11--The Big Picture

40 years ago, three human beings - with the help of many thousands of others - left our planet on a successful journey to our Moon, setting foot on another world for the first time. Tomorrow marks the 40th anniversary of the July 16, 1969 launch of Apollo 11, with astronauts Neil A. Armstrong, Michael Collins and Edwin E. "Buzz" Aldrin Jr. aboard. The entire trip lasted only 8 days, the time spent on the surface was less than one day, the entire time spent walking on the moon, a mere 2 1/2 hours - but they were surely historic hours. Scientific experiments were deployed (at least one still in use today), samples were collected, and photographs were taken to document the entire journey. Collected here are 40 images from that journey four decades ago, when, in the words of astronaut Buzz Aldrin: "In this one moment, the world came together in peace for all mankind". OT - Have mercy on my backside

I've come out of lurk mode to beg for mercy. It is my hope someone with knowledge of bicycle saddles will take mercy on me and direct me a to a good saddle for long distance/paved trail riding. Seems the older I get the less forgiving my backside has become. I've contemplated welding a tractor seat onto the bike, but I'm not comfortable enough with the image that creates to actually give it a try. Anyone?
