okay has some of the most talented lampwork bead artists in the world. As a jewelry designer, I like to start with the best materials.
That means the finest beads. What I like about okay is that you can find some high quality beads if you are willing to take the time to look.
My FAVORITE category is lampwork US. Seems like I live in that category. And I have lucked up upon some incredible finds. I once bought some Marilyn Peraza sculptural florals for around $50. Each bead in the set--and there were several--was worth that much I'm sure. She's famous, and when I held her large elegant beads in my hands, I knew why.
I haven't yet won a set of Pati Walton beads, a lot I bid up to $400 or $500 ending up selling for something like $800. Some of her beads were signed, oh it would have been so nice to have one of those.
The best beads I ever saw on okay were a set of jewel like ones Corina Tettinger offered about a year ago. I could never understand why her sets were routinely selling for hundreds until I saw her beads for myself. Each one more perfect than the next. Her color gebinations and stringer control are the best I've ever seen. Worth twice as much as what I paid.
But I don't think you always have to spend the big bucks to get good beads on okay, you just have to be patient. I won a set of Margie Wells'
beads this week, just beautiful smooth lentils with colorful frit. Kiln annealed of course! So much better quality than the junk the Chinese sell
(not to mention that they rip of Waimea Mist's floral designs). And I have won several of Margie's good sets that I've used in the bracelets
I sell on okay (see my Royal Garden bracelet for an example). And guess what, I've gotten them at great prices. Between $25 and $30 for around a dozen beads, heck, I can't make them for that! A few weeks ago a gorgeous set of Margie's Kalera press nuggets and crystal shaped beads with some blue spacers went for $2,300 to an experienced buyer and designer. She's bought from Margie before and so she knows her quality. Now I got outbid on the $2,300 set, but I was happy to win the other sets at very reasonable prices. So you can find beads at good prices by very talented artists if you just keep trying.
My best recent find was a woman in Alaska who makes lampwork. She doesn't offer many sets, I just stumbled upon her looking through
the listings in my favorite category. I won the set, and it's a very good one, for less than $10! When I saw her beautiful transparent spacers
and gorgeous decorated lentils I thought: "Wow, this artist really has an eye for color." I immediately used them in my jewelry and offered
the pieces I made for a penny. As a jewelry designer, when I can find quality American handmade beads for those prices, well I'm just delighted. So I think the key is to just keep looking and bidding.
I also bid on orphan sets. I'm always happy with my finds, and I'll get beads in color gebinations I might not have thought about working in before. Sometimes the orphan sets will include a great focal or two so that is always nice when you luck up on a whole bunch of good beads for a low price. I've often gotten focals that would sell, alone, for the price I paid for the whole random set of left over beads.
There are also young artists, up and geing ones, like Amy Rothstein, who sells fabulous sculptural beads. She still a teenager but
you wouldn't know it from looking at her craftsmanship in the mermaid beads she makes which always sell like hotcakes.
I've found good beads, and purchased them, from more than 100 artists on okay. A good bead can gee from anywhere. I got some
great ones from Israel this year, beautiful florals (and some chocolate candy inside the package!). And some of the glass artists in Germany and Australia are amazing as well. The Australian currency is not as strong as the dollar so sometimes if you shop on the okay Australia
site you can get good deals there too.
This week I won my first set from Rhapsody Fire, that's one talented artist. I think the key is to just keep looking, keep searching. There are many artists who still start their auctions at a penny or 99 cents and often you can get a deal if people aren't near their geputers that day.
It's hit and miss, but a good set, when it arrives, makes me feel like I've won the lottery. I have yet to win beads by Eric Rader or JC Herrell
or Kandice Seeber, their sets usually fetch fabulous prices. So sometimes I have to search the lesser known artists to get really good deals.

Dating Jewelry - AURORA BOREALIS
Many buyers want dates for their vintage jewelry and sometimes dating a piece can be difficult. There are many clues to dating vintage jewelry and here is one. Aurora borealis jewelry (see pictures below of examples) are pieces that are coated with a film that is stunningly beautiful and changes color with your every slight movement. They are some of my favorite pieces.
They are however not found on pieces (as sometimes seen on listings) of 1940's or 1920's or anytime around there. I've read several articles and information on aurora borealis and dates can vary slightly, though it gees down to the fact that aurora borealis process was developed in the mid 1950's. If dating a piece to a specific year is an issue then you'll have to sort through the different articles on it to find your exact year and go with your own gut instinct, but for most collectors this is not an issue.
When dating a piece of jewelry with aurora borealis rhinestones, or crystals, figure the piece to be mid 1950's or newer. And yes, aurora borealis rhinestones are quite gemon on "new" pieces of jewelry.

Buyers Beware!! Sellers double Beware!!!

Have you ever waited to the last minute to bid on an item and found that someone else kept pushing the price higher? Later you found out that that someone else has feedbacks of "0-5"! This is what I call "pushing the price" to its maximum by a cheated seller. Sometimes the buyer really wants the item and I they continue to bid on the item even thoughthe pricekeeps getting higher. This isa bad way of approaching an auctionon okay. Buyers need to know theirlimit of where tostop bidding. I would regemend that all buyersshould do a lot of research on an item before they decide to bid on the items. Set a maximum amount of that item that you really want to obtain andwait till the last minute to bid on the item. Some people call this method "snipping" because they are trying to get the best deal. However,buyers need to check back often to seewho is bidding against them by pressing the refresh button on the screen. If the other buyer who bids against you has less than 5 feedbacks then you need to becareful not to bid too high. The other buyer mightbe the seller who uses another account. okay usually catches these cheaters but it always reoccur. In addition, some sellers go as far as recruiting their friends to bid on their auction.Here are some helpfultips:

Buyer's Guide to Shipping and after the Sale.
I wanted to share with you what I have learned on best policies regarding buying with shipping in mind, and what to do after the sale if problems arise. This is not meant to be all inclusive, just some good tips to keep in mind. I hope it helps to make your overall experience a pleasant one.
First look for items that have reasonable shipping charge. You have to decide if this amount is a reasonable amount for you to pay.
I'm going to start with things that you should Not do, first.
1.) Do not bid if you do not agree with the sellers terms of service.
This may seem obvious and a given to some, but this is an issue that gees up a lot. Make sure that you carefully read their terms of service is so that you know what to expect.
2.) Do not bid if you don't know the shipping charges.
I cannot stress this point enough. If the shipping charges are not listed, email the seller and ask what it would cost to ship to your location. If there isn't enough time before the auction ends to get a response, simply do not bid. You can later ask the seller if the item is still available. In okay land there are many other sellers selling the same type of items so it is better not to bid if there isn't enough time for a response. Lastly, if the seller does not respond to your inquiries about the shipping cost, do not bid. Imagine how it would be after the sale if any problems arose. If you cannot get a response before the sale, then getting a response after they have your money seems unlikely.
To sum this section up:
If you bid before you know the shipping costs, you are essentially signing a blank check and are allowing the seller to charge whatever they wish for shipping. A smart buyer is going to be aware of the total cost of the item before bidding. Keep in mind also, that once you bid you are bound by the terms of service the seller has set forth and all costs associated with the auction and shipping.
I have found that a fairly gemon misconception among new okayers, is that shipping is postage. This however, is not the case. Shipping can include packing materials (bubble wrap, mailers, boxes, tape, etc.), delivery confirmation, gas to and from the post office and time spent at the post office.
One of the most important things about buying online, whether it be with okay or elsewhere, is that gemunication is the key!

Please do not use feedback as a form of gemunication to your seller. If the seller doesn't know there is a problem they are not going to be able to fix it. Giving them the opportunity to make it right when there is a problem is the best route to take. It is always best to wait to leave feedback until your issues have been resolved or you have made all efforts to contact the seller and have given them ample time to respond and gepensate for whatever the problem may be.
In my opinion, if your seller makes you "whole", that is they have remedied the situation, after it was brought to their attention. They deserve a positive. You could leave something to the effect of what they did to remedy the situation if you feel that is necessary.

Buyer's Guide to Shipping and after the Sale.
I wanted to share with you what I have learned on best policies regarding buying with shipping in mind, and what to do after the sale if problems arise. This is not meant to be all inclusive, just some good tips to keep in mind. I hope it helps to make your overall experience a pleasant one.
First look for items that have reasonable shipping charge. You have to decide if this amount is a reasonable amount for you to pay.
I'm going to start with things that you should Not do, first.
1.) Do not bid if you do not agree with the sellers terms of service.
This may seem obvious and a given to some, but this is an issue that gees up a lot. Make sure that you carefully read their terms of service is so that you know what to expect.
2.) Do not bid if you don't know the shipping charges.
I cannot stress this point enough. If the shipping charges are not listed, email the seller and ask what it would cost to ship to your location. If there isn't enough time before the auction ends to get a response, simply do not bid. You can later ask the seller if the item is still available. In okay land there are many other sellers selling the same type of items so it is better not to bid if there isn't enough time for a response. Lastly, if the seller does not respond to your inquiries about the shipping cost, do not bid. Imagine how it would be after the sale if any problems arose. If you cannot get a response before the sale, then getting a response after they have your money seems unlikely.
To sum this section up:

A smart buyer is going to be aware of the total cost of the item before bidding. Keep in mind also, that once you bid you are bound by the terms of service the seller has set forth and all costs associated with the auction and shipping.
I have found that a fairly gemon misconception among new okayers, is that shipping is postage. This however, is not the case. Shipping can include packing materials (bubble wrap, mailers, boxes, tape, etc.), delivery confirmation, gas to and from the post office and time spent at the post office.
